Boys State
The purpose of the Boys State program is to:
- Develop civic leadership and pride in American citizenship;
- Develop a keen interest in government;
- Develop in the young citizens of Boys State a full understanding of our American traditions and belief in the United States of America;
- Develop in young citizens a determination to maintain our form of government;
- Inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state, and nation; and
- Safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy.
We seek the best and brightest each year from student government, athletics, NHS, activism, JROTC, band, theatre, MUN - those who show unique potential and possess the following characteristics:
- Strong academic performance – a quick study, as this fast-paced program requires these young men to learn quickly and adapt to changing situations
- Excellent interpersonal skills – gets along well with others; possesses a balanced perspective and shows maturity for his age; well-mannered and self-confident without being arrogant
- Leadership skills – those who thrive at Boys State are those that “lead leaders” in your schools and are seeking to change your schools and their communities for the better
- Solid oratorical skills – excellence in persuasive speaking and confidence in large group settings is helpful
- A hard worker – someone who wants the chance to jump in and volunteer to lead versus sitting on the sidelines and cheering.
Each year, the Post 179 Boys State Program Director will request candidates from each of our local schools. A panel from the Post will interview candidates for available sponsorships to attend Boys State. Selected / sponsored candidates will then complete the online application.
